Cost of Educating a Student in Peel

With 140,000 students, the Peel District School Board is the largest public school system outside of Toronto - and we're still one of the fastest growing.

In 2004-05, the projected average cost of educating a student in Peel is $6,510 excluding direct capital grants. In 1999-2000, the average cost was $5,881 - showing the average cost has increased by $629 per student in five years.

The 2004-05 estimated cost of educating a Peel board student is $6,510 - based on the following expenses:

Expense Cost per student Percentage of total

instructional costs $5,295 81%
business and administration $197 3%
school operations and maintenance> $713 11%
transportation $237 4%
other $68 1%

Compared to other large school boards in Ontario, the Peel board's cost per student is in the mid-range. A province wide study of how school boards spend their money shows that more of the Peel board budget goes directly to the classroom than the average for Ontario boards.
