SCORE - Summer Camp Offering Recovery Education
What is taught?
The program is curriculum-based with a focus on improving reading, writing and mathematics. Students may have access to technology. There are in-class and homework assignments, as well as field trips. The emphasis is on skill building to catch up or keep up to grade level. A report card will be issued.
Program goals
Our program goals are to:
- improve student reading, writing and mathematics while students enjoy typical programs of summer camp - games, technology and field trips
- use a student planner in order to focus on improving learning skills such as organization, initiative and time management
Who is eligible to attend?
Only students registered in the Peel District School Board may attend SCORE. Students for SCORE are:
- in grades 7 and 8 and progressing with difficulty towards promotion (level one, 50 to 60 per cent average) or
- with promotion at risk (level R, less than 50 per cent average)
How is the program organized?
Students must be in grade 7 or 8. The average class size is 20 students. In addition to the teachers, there is an education assistant in each class.
The program takes place in different locations in Peel each year. You must contact your child’s school for more information.
When do classes take place?
Classes take place half days for four weeks, beginning in early July. Parents will be advised of start and end dates.
How does a student register?
Information is issued to schools and parents by the last week of April. Eligible students are identified by their home room teachers or guidance counsellors by the first week of May. Applications are forwarded to Continuing Education by about the third week in May. Final acceptance takes place in mid June. Registration is free; however, there is a $40 fee to cover the cost of snacks and field trips.
