Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I begin when returning to school?
Your first step is to make an appointment with a counsellor at either the Mississauga or Brampton sites. If you have an official transcript, please bring it. The counsellor will assess your previously earned credits and make suggestions as to what courses you could take and explain your options through PLAR.
Then, before you start class, make sure that you have set aside enough time in your schedule to review and understand your subject(s), complete your assignments and study for your evaluations.
Finally, make sure that you have the required text books and the proper tools, such as paper, pens, pencils and a calculator.
What documents are needed for registration?
You require an official secondary school transcript and/or any post-secondary transcripts.
If you do not have a transcript and
- you attended a high school in Ontario, you should contact the last school you attended and they will supply you with a copy of your transcript.
- you attended a public school in Peel but do not have your transcript, we can find your transcript in our records
- you are from another province, you must contact your last school in that province to request a copy of your transcript.
For mature students who are new to the Peel District School Board and who wish an equivalency assessment, one of the following original documents will be required:
- Canadian Citizenship (Birth Certificate, Birth Registration Card, Passport, Citizenship Card or Certificate)
- Permanent Resident Status (Permanent Resident Card (PRC) or (IMM5292))
- Proof of Landed Immigrant Status (Record of Landing IMM1000)
- Any immigration documents the family may have which may include:
- Temporary Resident Permit
- Work Permit/Employment Authorization
- Refugee Claimants/Convention Refugees
- Applicants for Landing/Approval in Principle (sponsorship within Canada)
- Minister's Permits (and/or extension thereof)
How do I prepare for the PLAR challenge process?
First, you must be enrolled in a secondary school course.
Next, with the help of a counsellor, you should carefully review the curriculum expectations for the subject you wish to challenge.
Then, gather as much information as you can to provide evidence of related experience to the course you are challenging. Such information may include certificates, letters from employers and other records of accomplishments. If there is enough evidence, fill out the challenge application form.
